Arne Slot's Message to Rio Ngumoha After Winning Goal

In a pulsating Premier League clash at St. James’ Park, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha etched his name into Liverpool's storied history with a breathtaking 100th-minute winner, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory against a resilient 10-man Newcastle United. The young winger’s composed finish not only clinched three vital points for the reigning champions but also marked him as Liverpool’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer, a record-breaking moment that has sparked excitement about the prodigy’s future.

The Moment of Magic

With 11 minutes of stoppage time signaled, Liverpool manager Arne Slot made a bold move, introducing 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha in the 96th minute for his Premier League debut. The teenager, who had already turned heads with a goal and assist during Liverpool’s preseason tour, was about to make history.

In the 100th minute, Liverpool crafted a moment of brilliance. Mohamed Salah, still on the pitch despite several substitutions, picked up the ball on the right flank and delivered a low cross into the box. Dominik Szoboszlai, showing remarkable awareness, dummied the ball, letting it roll through his legs to an unmarked Ngumoha at the back post. The 16-year-old, unfazed by the hostile atmosphere and the weight of the moment, struck a composed, first-time shot that curled past Pope and into the far corner. St. James’ Park fell silent as Liverpool’s players and fans erupted in celebration.

Slot's Post-Match Comments

In footage after the final whistle, Arne Slot made a beeline for the 16-year-old to congratulate him on the achievement. "What a moment - enjoy it!" the Dutchman said - with the cameras picking up the interaction.

"Rio can finish so well for his age," Slot said after the match. "I did hear someone say afterwards in the dressing room he would have taken a first touch but he is so confident. For his age he is a really good finisher."

A Captain's Message

Virgil van Dijk also heaped praise on the youngster, saying: "I'm very pleased for Rio, I've said it to him already it all starts now, he has to keep working hard and stay humble but definitely have to enjoy this because these nights, you can't take them for granted if you're in his position."

Rio's Reaction

"I think Dom just knew I was there," Ngumoha said. "He said to me in the changing room 'I hoped you were there' and then luckily he just looked and then I was there. As the ball came I just thought I back myself to score and then... I don't even know, it's crazy."
