Juve eyeing Brighton youngster amid midfield reshuffle

Italian giants Juventus are still working on a deal to bring Brighton midfielder Matt O’Riley to Turin, as per Fabrizio Romano.

24-year-old O’Riley joined the Seagulls last summer, however endured an injury-hit first season on the South coast. The Danish international scored his first goal in a 2-1 victory over Manchester City back in November, although failed to complete a full 90 minutes during the entire season.

After spells at both MK Dons and Celtic, Juve manager Igor Tudor is now keen to bring the former Fulham academy graduate to Italy’s Serie A, and help him regain both some fitness and form.

Low risk, high reward

The attempt to sign O’Riley is believed to be a loan deal at first, with an option to buy at the end of the season. Sources say that the London-born midfielder, who is eligible to represent Denmark courtesy of his Danish mother, is keen on the move.

O’Riley thrived at Celtic prior to his move south. Under the management of Ange Postecoglou, the highly rated youngster won player of the year and young player of the year during a title-winning 2023/24 campaign.

The standout performances captured the eye of Fabian Hürzeler, with the new Brighton boss bringing the Celtic man to the Amex Stadium for a fee of £25m. He suffered an injury just nine minutes into his debut, following a strong tackle in a Carabao Cup tie against Crawley that required surgery.

Midfield problems

Sadly for Juventus fans, the days where the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio control the central midfield areas are just a distant memory.

Fellow Serie A clubs Fiorentina and Lazio bought Nicolò Fagioli and Nicolò Rovella respectively, both present in the team last season, for combined fees of around €30m. With no other midfielders yet signed, Tudor’s side are lacking in depth with the season opener at home to Parma just over one week away. Despite the ‘Old Lady’ having spent €118m this window, they have not addressed the central areas. Former Aston Villa defensive midfielder Douglas Luiz is also expected to leave the Allianz Stadium.

The 36-time Serie A champions last lifted the Scudetto back in 2020, the longest domestic draught since an eight-year period between 2003-2011.
