Joe Cole Tips Arsenal and Liverpool Among Champions League Favourites for 2025/26
Former Chelsea and England midfielder Joe Cole has named Arsenal and Liverpool among his top contenders to win the UEFA Champions League this season, placing them alongside European heavyweights Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. Speaking on TNT Sports, Cole offered a detailed breakdown of the tournament’s leading sides, highlighting squad depth, recent form, and tactical evolution as key factors in his predictions.

Arsenal’s Rise: From Semi-Finalists to Serious Contenders
Arsenal’s inclusion in Cole’s elite bracket comes after a strong showing last season, where they reached the semi-finals before narrowly losing to eventual champions PSG. Mikel Arteta’s side kicked off their new European campaign with a confident 2–0 win away to Athletic Bilbao, showcasing the impact of their summer reinforcements.
With over £250 million spent on signings like Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, and Viktor Gyökeres, the Gunners now boast one of the deepest squads in Europe. Cole believes this depth could be decisive.
“Maybe Arsenal and Liverpool,” Cole said, placing them just behind PSG, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. “Bayern Munich have got quality, but I don’t think they have the depth Barcelona have got.”
Liverpool’s Late Drama and European Pedigree
Liverpool also made Cole’s shortlist after a dramatic last-minute win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield. Under Arne Slot, the Reds have undergone a tactical refresh, and Cole sees them as well-positioned to mount a serious challenge.
Their history in the competition — six-time winners and perennial knockout-stage threats — adds weight to their candidacy.
Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG: The Top Tier
Cole placed Barcelona, Real Madrid, and PSG in his “top bracket,” citing their blend of experience, squad depth, and recent form. Barcelona impressed with a commanding win over Newcastle, while PSG continued their dominance with a comfortable victory over Atalanta.
Real Madrid, despite some transitional concerns, remain a force in Europe and are expected to be in the mix deep into the tournament.
Manchester City: A Rebuilding Year?
Interestingly, Cole was more cautious about Manchester City’s chances. Despite a 2–0 win over Napoli and a derby victory against Manchester United, he noted their recent inconsistency and early European exit last season.
“I think how bad Manchester City have been at times over the last 12 months has probably sparked [Guardiola],” Cole said. “Maybe not this year, but certainly in the next few years.”
Chelsea’s Defensive Doubts
Former goalkeeper Shay Given also weighed in, suggesting Chelsea’s defensive frailties could undermine their campaign. While praising Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro’s attacking contributions, Given questioned whether the Blues could tighten up at the back enough to compete with Europe’s elite.
The Road Ahead
With the Champions League group stage underway, Cole’s predictions reflect the shifting dynamics of European football. Arsenal and Liverpool, once seen as outsiders, are now firmly in the conversation — and if their early form holds, they could be lifting silverware come May.
The message is clear: the Champions League is wide open, and England’s finest are ready to stake their claim.
